The work, in plain English.
What it is
Design, build and install of fitted wardrobes and bedroom storage, carcasses, doors, hanging rails, shelving and drawers, scribed to your walls and finished to blend with the room.
Who it's for
Homeowners who've run out of storage in existing furniture, buyers of period houses with awkward chimney breasts and alcoves, and self-builders and renovators finishing bedrooms and dressing rooms properly.
When you need it
When freestanding wardrobes are wasting floor area, when an alcove is being used as an open dumping ground, or when the ceilings, skirtings and coving deserve furniture that respects them rather than sits awkwardly against them.
Why a specialist
Fitted storage uses every inch, floor to ceiling, wall to wall, in a way freestanding units can't. Done properly, it also lifts the whole room aesthetically.
A recent Sidmouth wardrobe refit.
Dated, mismatched doors swapped for floor-to-ceiling white sliding wardrobes with a full-length mirror. Drag the slider to compare.
After
BeforeSmall problems compound quickly.
The gap between a beautifully-fitted wardrobe and a badly-fitted one is bigger than any other kind of carpentry, and it's visible every day.
- Wardrobes bolted straight to uneven walls without scribing leave visible gaps down the sides: instantly a DIY look.
- Cheap MDF flat-pack carcasses sag under real clothes weight after a couple of years.
- Doors hung on poor hinges bind and misalign, and stay that way, because there's no adjustment left in them.
- Rails set at the wrong height leave hanging clothes brushing the shelf or the floor.
- Cutting into a chimney breast or wall without checking for services can damage cables or pipes hidden in the plaster.
Where DIY and general trades come unstuck.
- 01Buying oversized flat-pack units that don't fit the alcove and having to leave gaps.
- 02Ignoring the ceiling line, sloped or uneven ceilings need scribing, not force.
- 03Fitting drawers into shallow alcoves without checking runner depth first.
- 04Skipping a proper design conversation, most people ask for 'a wardrobe' and end up wishing they'd asked for drawers, shoe storage or a hanging area for long dresses.

The specifics, materials, methods, and where each option fits.
Bedroom storage is where carpentry has to think like furniture, precise, proportionate and honest about how it will actually be used.
Alcove wardrobes
The classic period-house solution, a run of fitted wardrobes flanking a chimney breast, floor to ceiling, scribed to the wall and ceiling for a seamless finish.
Full-wall wardrobes
A run of wardrobes across the whole wall of a room, often with a mix of hanging, shelving and drawers behind full-height doors.
Under-eaves storage
Sloped ceilings in loft conversions and cottage bedrooms need bespoke work, nothing off the shelf fits an angled ceiling properly.
Doors and finishes
Shaker doors, flat-panel doors, painted or primed for site painting, plus a range of handles and knobs to match the room.
Internal fit-out
Hanging rails, adjustable shelving, drawer runners, shoe racks, pull-out rails, internal layout is planned around what you actually own rather than a generic template.
Bedroom storage beyond wardrobes
Fitted bedside cabinets, dressing tables, window seats with drawer storage, and headboard-integrated shelving.
Straight answers before you enquire.
How much do fitted wardrobes cost?▾
Pricing depends on width, height, materials, door style and internal fit-out. Every quote is free and written down before any work starts: fixed price or day rate, whichever suits.
How long does a wardrobe install take?▾
A pair of alcove wardrobes is typically a few days on site. Full-wall or whole-room installations can run to a week or more. The timescale is set out in the written quote.
Do you paint the wardrobes too?▾
Doors are supplied primed or painted. Site painting of doors and frames can be included, or left for a decorator to finish, either works.
Do you fit kitchens?▾
No, Alex avoids kitchen fitting. Bedroom wardrobes, bedroom storage and study furniture are the focus.
How quickly can I get a quote?▾
Quotes are free. Alex books your site survey in and completes it within 7 days of your enquiry: often faster. You get a clear written quote afterwards, either as a fixed price or a day rate, whichever suits the job.
How soon can the work start once I accept?▾
Most jobs are booked in within a month of quote acceptance, depending on the size of the work and the current schedule. Smaller jobs often slot in sooner, call Alex directly to check current availability.
Can you work around existing features, coving, skirting, radiators?▾
Yes. Fitted work is designed around what's already in the room, coving, skirting, radiators and pipework are all accounted for at the survey stage.
Is the work guaranteed?▾
Yes. Full installations completed from start to finish by AJW Carpentry, where AJW supplies all the materials, carry a 5-year workmanship guarantee. The guarantee does not apply to repair or remedial work, fit-only jobs where you supply the materials, or damage caused by misuse or third-party alterations after completion.
How do I pay?▾
Bank transfer or cash. There is no card machine on site. Pricing is agreed up front, fixed price or day rate, so there are no surprise line items when the job is finished.
Which areas do you cover?▾
