The work, in plain English.
What it is
Hanging internal doors properly, measuring the opening, trimming the door to size, cutting hinges and latches in cleanly, and setting the door so it swings smoothly, closes on the latch first time and sits with an even reveal all round.
Who it's for
Homeowners renovating a room or a whole house, landlords upgrading tired doors between tenancies, and self-builders and extenders finishing second-fix carpentry properly.
When you need it
When a door drags on the carpet, slams shut on its own, refuses to catch on the latch, has visible gaps around the frame, or looks tired next to a freshly-decorated room.
Why a specialist
A badly-hung internal door is a permanent daily annoyance: you notice it every time you use it. A door hung by someone who does it every week takes about the same time as one hung badly, and it just works.
Small problems compound quickly.
Internal doors are the small details that decide whether a finished room feels well-built or budget. Get them wrong and the whole room feels off, no matter how good the paint and flooring are.
- Doors that swing open or shut on their own indicate the frame is out of plumb, over time this stresses hinges and pulls screws.
- Doors that catch on the carpet wear grooves in the pile and eventually chip the bottom of the door itself.
- Ill-fitting doors between bedrooms and landings let noise and light through, which matters most in family homes.
- Sticking latches get forced, snapping spindles and worn strike plates that then need replacing entirely.
- Poor reveal margins around a door instantly signal 'DIY finish' to anyone valuing the property.
Where DIY and general trades come unstuck.
- 01Buying oversized or undersized doors online without measuring the actual opening, most doors need trimming on all four edges.
- 02Cutting hinges freehand with a chisel and no jig, hinges end up recessed unevenly and the door binds.
- 03Reusing old worn hinges on new doors to save £15, every hinge cycle is a bit sloppier than the last.
- 04Fitting doors before the flooring goes down and never coming back to trim the bottom to the finished floor level.

The specifics, materials, methods, and where each option fits.
Internal doors seem like a simple job: they aren't. The variation between openings in a single house can be significant, and consistent results across a whole property need a system.
Door types
Solid-core internal doors, engineered oak, primed softwood ready for paint, glazed doors, fire doors (FD30) for stairwell and integral-garage openings, and pocket-door or sliding hardware where space is tight.
Hinges and latches
Ball-bearing hinges for heavy doors, standard butt hinges for lightweight, concealed hinges where the aesthetic matters, and correctly-rated fire-door hinges and intumescent kits for FD30 installations.
Frames and linings
Existing linings are inspected, if they are sound and square, doors are hung to them. Where the lining is twisted or damaged, a new lining is fitted so the door has a stable reference.
Whole-house installs
For a full run of doors, jobs are scheduled so all doors are hung in one visit, tested against each other, and adjusted so heights and reveals are consistent throughout.
Fire doors
FD30 fire-door installations follow the door manufacturer's fitting instructions, the correct gap tolerances, hinge count, intumescent seals and closer where required.
Straight answers before you enquire.
How much does it cost to hang an internal door?▾
Pricing is variable and depends on the door, the ironmongery, and whether the lining needs work. Every quote is free and written down before any work starts, fixed price per door or a day rate for larger runs, whichever suits.
How many doors can you hang in a day?▾
A straightforward like-for-like door hang runs to several a day. Jobs involving new linings, trimming for finished floor levels or fire-door specifications take longer per door. The quote will set out how many days on site.
Do you fit fire doors?▾
Yes, FD30 fire doors are fitted to the manufacturer's instructions with the correct gaps, intumescent seals and rated hinges.
Can you fit doors I've already bought?▾
Yes: fit-only is available. Just note that the 5-year workmanship guarantee only covers full installations where AJW supplies the doors and materials.
How quickly can I get a quote?▾
Quotes are free. Alex books your site survey in and completes it within 7 days of your enquiry: often faster. You get a clear written quote afterwards, either as a fixed price or a day rate, whichever suits the job.
How soon can the work start once I accept?▾
Most jobs are booked in within a month of quote acceptance, depending on the size of the work and the current schedule. Smaller jobs often slot in sooner, call Alex directly to check current availability.
Will my doors match the rest of the house?▾
Doors are specified with you before ordering, style, finish, glazing and ironmongery are all agreed at survey stage so the finished job is consistent with what you already have.
Is the work guaranteed?▾
Yes. Full installations completed from start to finish by AJW Carpentry, where AJW supplies all the materials, carry a 5-year workmanship guarantee. The guarantee does not apply to repair or remedial work, fit-only jobs where you supply the materials, or damage caused by misuse or third-party alterations after completion.
How do I pay?▾
Bank transfer or cash. There is no card machine on site. Pricing is agreed up front, fixed price or day rate, so there are no surprise line items when the job is finished.
