Service overview

The work, in plain English.

What it is

Interior timber bi-fold door installation, measuring the opening, fitting the track and pivots, hanging the door panels, and setting the alignment so panels fold, close and latch smoothly.

Who it's for

Homeowners opening up cupboards, wardrobes, utility spaces, airing cupboards and internal room dividers where a swing door would take up too much space.

When you need it

When the swing arc of a normal door is stealing usable floor area, when a cupboard opening is wider than a single door will cover neatly, or when a run of doors needs to disappear cleanly out of the way.

Why a specialist

Bi-folds are mechanically fussier than a normal hinged door, track, pivots, guides and panel alignment all have to be within tight tolerances. A poorly-fitted bi-fold jumps the track and refuses to close; a well-fitted one runs silently for years.

What happens if it's ignored

Small problems compound quickly.

Nothing gives away a rushed carpentry job like a bi-fold that won't sit flush against its neighbour. The mechanism is unforgiving of shortcuts.

  • Tracks fitted out of level cause panels to swing open on their own or resist closing.
  • Undersized panels leave visible gaps between doors that let dust and light through: obvious every time you walk past.
  • Pivots not through-fixed into solid timber work loose over time and eventually pull out of the frame entirely.
  • Panels cut without allowance for finished floor level catch on carpets or scrape hard flooring.
  • Cheap wheeled runners installed instead of proper pivots wear out in a couple of years of daily use.
Common mistakes we see

Where DIY and general trades come unstuck.

  • 01Buying a bi-fold kit without checking the opening is square, most openings are out by 5–10mm somewhere.
  • 02Fitting the track before checking headroom for the pivots and closers.
  • 03Ignoring the hand of the fold, panels have to fold in a specific direction based on the room layout.
  • 04Skipping the alignment guides at the bottom, which is why cheap bi-folds swing about at the base.

Benefits

What you actually get.

Panels that align

Adjacent panels sit flush across the whole run: no visible steps or gaps.

Smooth folding action

Correctly-set tracks and pivots let panels fold with one finger, not two hands.

Space reclaimed

Bi-folds free up the floor area that a swing door would eat into, useful in tight utility rooms and hallways.

No jumping tracks

Proper alignment guides at the bottom keep panels running true at the base as well as the top.

Quiet operation

Good pivots and correctly-loaded panels don't rattle or squeak on the runner.

Backed for 5 years

Full installs carry the 5-year workmanship guarantee.

Service detail

The specifics, materials, methods, and where each option fits.

Interior bi-folds live or die by the alignment. It sounds simple, panels on a track, but a millimetre or two out at the top translates into visible problems at the bottom.

Configurations

2-panel folds for narrow cupboards, 3-panel folds (2+1) where one panel opens as a normal door, and 4-panel runs for wider wardrobes or room dividers.

Track systems

Top-hung timber bi-fold track with pivots, ball catches or magnetic catches, and bottom alignment guides that keep panels running true without carrying the weight.

Panel materials

Solid timber, engineered timber and primed panels ready for paint. Panels are trimmed on site for a precise fit: most openings need it.

Hardware

Concealed pivots for a clean look, or exposed hinges where the aesthetic calls for it. Handles and knobs sourced to match the rest of the ironmongery in the room.

Where bi-folds work best

Airing cupboards, walk-in wardrobes, utility rooms, understair cupboards, and room dividers where a swing door would obstruct traffic. Not typically used for external openings, those are a different product category entirely.

Frequently asked

Straight answers before you enquire.

Are these external or internal bi-folds?

Interior timber bi-folds only. External bi-fold doors are a specialist glazed product and are handled by dedicated external door installers.

How wide can a bi-fold run be?

Most internal openings are covered by 2, 3 or 4-panel configurations. Very wide openings can be split into two runs. Alex will confirm what works best for your specific opening at the survey.

How quickly can I get a quote?

Quotes are free. Alex books your site survey in and completes it within 7 days of your enquiry: often faster. You get a clear written quote afterwards, either as a fixed price or a day rate, whichever suits the job.

How soon can the work start once I accept?

Most jobs are booked in within a month of quote acceptance, depending on the size of the work and the current schedule. Smaller jobs often slot in sooner, call Alex directly to check current availability.

Can I supply my own bi-fold doors?

Yes: fit-only is offered. Note that the 5-year workmanship guarantee only applies to full installations where AJW supplies the materials.

Do bi-folds work over carpet?

Yes, but the panels are trimmed to the finished floor level and the bottom guide is set accordingly. Timing matters, ideally the flooring is down before fitting, or the doors are trimmed to a known finished level.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Full installations completed from start to finish by AJW Carpentry, where AJW supplies all the materials, carry a 5-year workmanship guarantee. The guarantee does not apply to repair or remedial work, fit-only jobs where you supply the materials, or damage caused by misuse or third-party alterations after completion.

How do I pay?

Bank transfer or cash. There is no card machine on site. Pricing is agreed up front, fixed price or day rate, so there are no surprise line items when the job is finished.

Which areas do you cover?

AJW Carpentry covers Sidmouth, Exeter, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Seaton, Honiton, Newton Poppleford, Woodbury and Ottery St Mary. If you are just outside those areas, still get in touch, we often travel a short distance further for the right job.

Are you insured?

Yes. AJW Carpentry holds public liability insurance up to £2,000,000, so your home and belongings are properly covered while we work.
